The Rangers In The South is a premium action game for PC developed by DPA Studios. It is a roguelike ARPG set in an expansive and ever-changing fantasy world. In it, players get to create their adventure by choosing what paths to take as they face hordes of enemies and search for treasure. 

Similar to games like Eldest Souls and Heroes of Hammerwatch, The Rangers In The South boasts retro pixel graphics and a vast open world divided into unique locations for players to explore. It also allows for diverse character builds using hundreds of skills and traits. 

Carve your path 

The Rangers In The South is an action RPG adventure that takes inspiration from classic SNES games. It features a fantasy setting wherein you're into its world and lets you carve out your path as you want. There are more than five unique biomes to see as you uncover a large map and traverse the land. Each location hosts a set of dungeons and villages to visit. 

The highlight aspect of the experience in The Rangers In The South is its classless character system. Instead, you get to choose from different character traits, hundreds of skills, and various gear to strengthen your hero. Experiment with different builds to find one that suits your play style and will help you reach further to discover the mysteries and secrets of the land waiting to be revealed. 

What's more, the game features permadeath, which adds to the challenge. However, you retain exploration progress, items, and skills for succeeding characters, so there's that. In its current state, though, the gameplay experience is rather lackluster, with enemies and dungeons feeling the same and skills having very little differentiation among them. Also, some balance issues still need to be tweaked further. 

Charming but could be better 

All in all, The Rangers In The South is a charming retro adventure and a nod to classic titles from the SNES era, and it mostly succeeds in its endeavor. However, the gameplay experience falls a bit short with balancing issues and a lack of variety. Hopefully, future updates will fix and build upon these aspects. Nevertheless, it is a solid game that is worth checking out.
