Soulframe is a video game developed by Digital Extremes, the brains behind the Warframe game. This open-world adventure game will take players to a fantasy world inspired by Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke. Like Warframe, this one is also free to play.

Soulframe is described as the mirror universe version of Warframe. However, it is neither a sequel nor a spiritual successor.  Whereas Warframe is a first-person shooter, this game is a fantasy MMO that focuses on melee combat. It is also slow and heavy compared to the super fast and crazy high-speed gameplay of Warframe.

What is Soulframe?

Soulframe is an MMO that features themes of nature, restoration, and exploration. As noted, its premise is inspired by the movies Princess Mononoke and The NeverEnding Story. It focuses on the collision between industry and nature. Here, the world is angry and is shifting the ground throughout the day. With that premise in place, players can expect proceduralism within the cave networks and crevasses.

As mentioned, the game is set in a "sister" universe of Warframe. However, this does not mean that it plays as a new installment to the FPS game. While Warframe is a sci-fi game, this will be a suitably strange take on fantasy. Additionally, it features melee combat instead of shooting mechanics. Furthermore, its gameplay will be more heavy and slow instead of fast-paced.

However, it does share similarities to its predecessor. Like Warframe, it will focus on cooperative player vs. environment combat. This is in addition to the procedurally generated environments that you can explore. The game will also have a very open hub world similar to the newer open-world planets of Warframe. It will have a greater focus on exploration than what Warframe offers though.

Should you play it?

If you are a fan of the Warframe series, then Soulframe will be right up your alley. While the game has a different premise than the popular shooter, it gives players another thing to be excited about. It features a new fantasy open world you can explore as you engage in heavy melee combat. Fret not, however, as the game will still provide action-packed cooperative gameplay.
