Poke646 is a free single-player modification for Valve’s Half-Life, developed by Marc “Term” Schroeder and the Poke646 Team. First released in 2001, it remains one of the most acclaimed total conversions for the GoldSrc engine. Instead of the usual small tweaks, it delivers a full expansion with new levels, weapons, enemies, and an original soundtrack.

Set thirteen months after the Black Mesa incident, the campaign casts players as Damien Reeves, a lab assistant in the Poke646 research facility. When an alien invasion threatens to overrun the city, Reeves must activate generators to shut down Xen portals and save survivors. 

What does Poke646 do best?

The mod’s strength lies in its complete overhaul of content. Players explore over 40 maps spread across diverse urban and industrial areas, from arcades and sewers to libraries, rooftops, and subway tunnels. The visuals feature more than 1,500 custom textures, which, though dated by today’s standards, were strikingly detailed for their time and helped set the mood for each setting.

Combat is refreshed through new weapons and enemies. Instead of simply reusing Half-Life’s arsenal, Poke646 introduces nail guns, alien-based firearms, and creative enemy encounters that change the pacing of battles. These additions ensure that firefights feel different from the original game. To complement the new environments and weapons, the developers also created a 30-minute original soundtrack, enhancing immersion with tense and atmospheric tracks.

Another major highlight is the sequel, Poke646: Vendetta, which continues the story with more locations and challenges. Both games are included in the Anniversary Edition, released in 2016, which ensures compatibility with modern Steam versions of Half-Life. Together, the two campaigns deliver four to six hours of fresh gameplay, making the mod feel closer to an official expansion than a fan project.

Dated but beautiful for its age

Poke646 has earned its reputation as one of the best Half-Life single-player mods ever made. Its blend of original story, unique assets, and polished level design set a high bar for community projects. While its visuals reflect the limits of the early 2000s and it requires a copy of Half-Life to play, the Anniversary Edition ensures accessibility today.
