Peripeteia is a free action video game wherein you can live the life of a cyborg supersoldier. Developed by Shodanon, banebigguy, and Eighth Exodus, this 3D gritty shooter and RPG hybrid of a game is a cyberpunk stealth “immersive sim” adventure that takes you to the streets of an alt-history post-Soviet world.

Inspired by the likes of System Shock and Deus Ex, Peripeteia features POV switching to accommodate your current actions, the choice between stealth and brute force, and other different gameplay mechanics. Take note that this version is only a demo.

The assignment is your top priority

The world of Peripeteia takes place in an alternate history Poland, wherein mankind has entered a post-Soviet cyberpunk setting. Advanced technology is now common and you get to play as Marie, a young cybernetic supersoldier who works as a mercenary inside the corrupted International Disputed Zone. Your assignments will have you hacking, interrogating, and gunning down any targets or threats as you move across the sprawling cityscape.

This single-player game offers the freedom to switch between first-person and third-person views outside of in-game interfaces. This is because you can either approach enemies stealthily like in the Hitman games or just wreak havoc with your gun. Additionally, the game lets you hack computer terminals and talk to informants to gather the intel you’ll need. The freedom to explore and change tactics makes it a highly explorative RPG.

However, this can be tricky to complete as the maps you’ll explore are huge and dimly lit. It’s quite easy to get lost due to the lack of markers and a mission journal to remind you where to go and what to do. The immersive part of this sim will quite literally force you to pay attention to your surroundings.

Could use some feature adjustments

All in all, Peripeteia is a nice spiritual successor to old cyberpunk immersive sim games. While it can be confusing to traverse, the world setting itself is rife with storytelling and offers you the chance to mix up your playstyles depending on the current situation and what you can do. Even though it’s only a demo, it properly highlights the good parts of the game.
