Combining bullets, beauty, and badassery

Gungrave G.O.R.E marks the first full game after about 18 years, after 2004’s Gungrave: Overdose. There was also a short prologue experience titled Gungrave VR, released in 2017. With that much of a gap, the visual upgrade is already a given, but players will be delighted to see how it retains the original art style while recreating a new world using high-resolution graphics.

Like most games, you take control of Grave and go on hunting bosses and everything that stands in your way. Unfortunately, its overall concept traps it into the same challenges as its predecessors. Sure enough, it features faster gameplay than other Gungrave games, but it will still come across as slow for experienced players, especially those who tried the Devil May Cry or God of War franchises.

What saves this new entry, however, is the variety of the puzzles and its varied gameplay potential. New weapon customizations make for new fighting opportunities and can be used for solving other puzzles, which this game surprisingly introduces better than its predecessors. Apart from these mental challenges, you are given the opportunity to take in and enjoy locations based on real-life Southeast Asia.

The right direction for the franchise

It's safe to say that Gungrave G.O.R.E takes it a couple of steps in the right direction despite there being inherent flaws in the Gungrave franchise. The pacing of the battles is accelerated and the puzzles fit in more naturally than they did in the previous entries. More importantly, it pushes the technical limitations of modern gaming, featuring impressive visual quality.
