The AMC Squad Mod is a free-to-play action video game created by the AMC Squad Developers. This project was initially a mod based on Duke Nukem 3D but has since become a standalone game. This mod features 11 characters with a unique set of weapons, appearances, items, and voiceovers.

As a story-driven narrative, it’s divided into several episodes that feature varied locations and hidden areas to explore.

Story and gameplay

The story of AMC Squad Mod centers on a paramilitary group called The AMC Squad, formed after the disappearance of Earth’s greatest hero. Tasked to fight off the biggest threats to Earth, the squad is composed of the best fighters in the Solar System. Among these threats is the Cycloid race of aliens, but the heroes are set to battle against a threat new to even their most supernatural members.

This epic narrative is backed by engaging gameplay. Players will need to analyze the battlefield, then gather information, resources, and equipment. They can choose to either approach threats strategically or simply overwhelm enemies with sheer firepower. Regardless, they can choose between 11 characters, each having a distinct playstyle. For instance, the warlock Sangluss weaves magic while the knight Merlijn wields ancient weaponry.

The game is divided into four episodes, totaling over 20 hours of playtime. The mission-based levels are highly interactive and well-designed, hiding many secrets that players will want to find. It features a fully-fledged loadout system and a wide variety of vehicles like motorcycles and spaceships. There are in-game cutscenes, and pre-rendered FMV sequences, all voice-acted. However, the quality of the voice acting leaves a lot to be desired.

Should you play it?

It’s initially a mod for Duke Nukem 3D, but this mod isn’t made only for fans of that game. One can argue The AMC Squad Mod isn’t even a mod anymore. This project succeeds in combining retro-shooter mechanics with elements of modern video games to create an FPS experience many will enjoy. There are flaws, especially in terms of voice acting and polish, but it remains worthy of your time.
