Dragon Ball RPG: Goku's Tale is a free role-playing game for PC created by an indie developer who goes by JoshGHz. It takes the classic Dragon Ball story from its manga and anime series and turns it into an RPG adventure. It follows the story of Goku early on in his life and martial arts training.

Compared to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot or Dragon Ball FighterZ which features heavy fast-paced action sequences, Dragon Ball RPG: Goku's Tale focuses more on the story and adventure. It boasts a large map divided into sections for players to explore and turn-based combat.

Follow Goku's journey

Dragon Ball is one of the most influential manga series ever created, spawning multiple anime shows shortly after. It had drama, humor, and plenty of over-the-top action. Those things translated well into video game experiences, specifically story-driven fighting games. So, it's a bit of a nice surprise when a game like Dragon Ball RPG: Goku's Tale appears, and it focuses more on the narrative than anything else.

Dragon Ball RPG: Goku's Tale follows the titular character early on in his youth as he's just about to set off on a grand journey to search for the mythical Dragon Balls. The game is presented in a top-down perspective with retro pixel graphics, and you will be exploring a large map divided into multiple areas throughout. You will follow the story and meet its iconic cast of characters.

As mentioned earlier, combat is of the turn-based variety, you will mostly be facing various beasts and creatures, and some fellow martial artists. A couple of things to keep in mind, with the first being that the game is still in Alpha. Also, it only covers the Tien Shinhan Saga arc as far as the story goes, so there are still quite some ways to go.

Something different and potentially great

All in all, Dragon Ball RPG: Goku's Tale is for fans of the popular series who can experience the story in a different way. It's retro, charming, and pretty interesting from the get-go. Now, the game is still pretty early on in its development but already has the potential to be something great. Hopefully, things go smoothly and the full version will come soon.
