Moonring is a free-to-play role-playing game for PC coming from developer Fluttermind, LLC. It is a retro-style RPG featuring pixel graphics and a distinct neon aesthetic. In it, players take on the role of mysterious beings who set forth to become Gods' representatives.

Taking inspiration from the classic Ultima series and similar to games like Gothic in gameplay, Moonring has old-school vibes with modern gaming sensibilities with its tactical and engaging turn-based combat. It also boasts a large sprawling world filled with dungeons for players to explore wherein they can create their own adventures.

Dreamless

Moonring takes place in the dark fantasy world of Caldera, which was plunged into darkness. Decades later, the Five Moons rose in the sky along with mysterious gods. With them were devotees called the Dreamless, blessed with supernatural gifts in exchange for their devotion. You are one of these beings looking to be the next Archon, the representative of the gods themselves.

The game’s world is vast with hand-design levels that are procedurally generated, so every dungeon you enter will be different from the last. Within them are over 100 enemy types across creeps and bosses. Employ 35 gifts from the gods that evolve and change with the phases of the moons. There's a sailing mechanic for traveling, complete with ship-to-ship combat and the ability to board others.

The game also features a hidden magic element to it and various mysteries to be discovered as you explore its large map. The experience is rounded out with a synth OST with 50 tracks to listen to and jam to. Sadly, the game is prone to random crashes and a save bug that messes up in-game progress as players have been reporting.

An ambitious project

In conclusion, Moonring is an engaging RPG with a sprawling world and engaging combat systems in place. The retro neon pixel aesthetics and synth soundtrack are just icing on what is already a pretty great game. The fact that it is completely free to play is just amazing. Hopefully, the issues mentioned will be addressed quickly. Nevertheless, this gets an easy recommendation and is worth any fan's time and attention.
