Yars Rising is a platformer with deep Metroidvania roots and stylized and vibrant 2.5D graphics. Developed by WayFoward, Atari launched this game as one of its richest adventure exploration titles. It features a cyber-punk aesthetic with tight and satisfying combat mechanics.  

Yars Rising starts with a young hacker named Emi Kimura, who is contacted by a mysterious patron who reveals damning information against a shadowy corporation. Compelled to take down evil, Emi ventures forth to take matters into her own hands, growing with power and knowledge behind this mysterious enemy the further she goes.

The core gameplay relies on its Metroidvania roots of side-scrolling and shooting enemies with punishing mechanics and platforming yet fun and rewarding gameplay. 

The game’s progression system introduces multiple move sets, upgrades, and more. It also features numerous mini-games to break the mundane with classic and challenging retro mini-games that provide a decent test for players while tying it with the lore. Emi can’t always shoot and jump out of trouble, as such, she’s given stealth and other tools, creating tense action and an added layer of strategy for players to leverage. 

This cute game features 2.5D graphics with sci-fi themes while remaining vibrant and colorful thanks to its anime-like aesthetics. The environments and levels in this title are distinct and unique, utilizing the fantastically rendered models as they captivate audiences with this take on sci-fi with a tinge of cyber-punk visuals. Moreover, the interesting ensemble of characters Emi meets is a treat to interact with due to their unique personalities and great design.
