Prototype 2 is a sequel to the original Prototype, set about 14 months later. This premium game takes place in New York Zero and delivers the same gore and action, but this time, it follows a new protagonist, Sgt. James Heller.

The story of Prototype 2 opens with a cutscene revealing that Sgt. Heller’s family was killed by those infected with the virus. Now, only one thing drives him: seeking revenge. While this sequel is best experienced after playing the first game, newcomers can still jump in without much trouble.

An infected world packed with missions

Prototype 2 is a sandbox title that lets you explore a vast open world. There are three distinct zones, each with a different atmosphere. The Green Zone is an area with a strong military presence. The Yellow Zone is a massive but overcrowded quarantine area. Finally, the Red Zone is a total nightmare, completely overrun by the virus. Each zone has side missions, encouraging exploration.

Heller possesses a wide array of superhuman powers and abilities, transforming his hands into claws, tendrils, or hammerfists to wreak havoc. You can tear apart heavy objects, shred enemies, and as the game progresses, you’ll feel that he becomes stronger and stronger. You can also customize your character by mixing and matching mutation perks to create a build that suits your playstyle.

Beyond the usual hunt-and-kill gameplay, this installment adds a unique twist: the ability to shapeshift into anyone you encounter. You absorb their memories and gain new abilities. Take note, however, that this game has mature content, with intense violence, gore, and strong language. As an old title, the graphics are also not as polished as modern games. Furthermore, some players might find the side missions repetitive.
