Charming minimalistic puzzle platformer
Minimalism is a premium action game from PixelMouse. It's a 2D puzzle platformer that has players control a cube as they navigate labyrinthian levels in search of a way out. They will need to look for keys needed to open doors while overcoming traps and challenges.
Much like games, such as Thomas Was Alone or other games from the developer, Distant Space, Minimalism takes a decidedly minimalistic approach to game and level design, with plain backgrounds and line art abound. That is complemented by gameplay that is easy to learn but difficult to master.
Just a lowly cube
As is typically the case with these types of games, there's no plot or story to speak of in Minimalism. You do have a non-descript and unassuming cube as your main protagonist, though. You find yourself trapped inside an unknown space filled with dangers at every turn, and you'll have to navigate through them to find a way out and escape.
This game features spikes, shooting arrows, and all manner of deadly contraptions to get in your way. There are some instances where you'll stick to walls or utilize special platforms that reverse gravity to overcome platforming challenges. It's all one large maze that's divided into 30 rooms, each one requiring a key in order to open doors to the next area.
You'll start off slow, but the challenge and complexity gradually ramp up as you progress into later stages. It should go without saying, but this game comes with a steep difficulty curve. Even if you're used to this type of gameplay, the experience is fairly short, clocking in at under five hours. It's not a big deal, but something worth mentioning all the same.
Simple yet challenging
In conclusion, Minimalism is a fun and challenging platformer to check out if you're a fan of the genre and are looking for something new to try out. The minimalist art style is charming and the gameplay is deceptively simple. It's not a long game by any stretch but it's worth checking out for what it is. Go play it now.
