Mario Kart World marks the ninth entry in the series and serves as a launch title for Nintendo’s Switch 2. Developed by Nintendo, departs from its traditional circuit-based racing formula, this installment introduces a seamless open world where players drive between tracks, explore freely, and discover hidden challenges and stickers to customize their karts. 

An expanded racing adventure 

Mario Kart World introduces three headline modes: Grand Prix with multi-stage touring, the high-stakes Knockout Tour where racers are eliminated after checkpoint laps, and Free Roam—a wide sandbox.  Races now support up to 24 competitors, double the previous standard, significantly enhancing the chaos and intensity of online play. Items remain scattered throughout the map for players to use. 

The biggest upgrade from Mario Kart 8 deluxe is the balanced approach of items as well as the introduction of better mechanics for competitive play such as tricking, side-railing, and wall-jumping. Moreover, no items outshine one another, balancing previous overpowered items, making it a fairer race for all. Additionally, the game features more detailed environments, designs, and weather cycles.

Mario Kart World redefines the franchise with its open-world twist, offering fresh ways to race, explore, and compete. With new game modes, expanded online play, and balanced mechanics, it appeals to both casual and competitive racers. However, the shift in format may take getting used to for longtime fans. Still, it’s a thrilling evolution that refreshes the beloved formula with creativity and depth.
