Hardspace: Shipbreaker is a sci-fi space game where the player takes on the role of a blue-collar spaceship salvager. The game is based heavily on physics, with the structural integrity of the things that the player will need to salvage playing an important aspect of the game.

The salvaging mechanic of this game can be likened to a number of games, including Scrap Mechanic. However, a closer comparison can be made with Space Engineers due to the space setting. Hardspace: Shipbreakers also depicts something of a dystopian future.

Repay your debt

In Hardspace: Shipbreakers, the player starts out owing an enormous debt to the faceless LYNX organization. They must repay that debt by salvaging useful components and materials from derelict spaceships. Players deposit their scavenged results into a designated zone, and the value is credited to the player. The player’s aim is to repay their debt.

Next-gen physics and a detailed story

The game features a story that the player mostly experiences through calls and other forms of voice chatter. The game itself is built around what the developers call “next-gen physics,” with the environment (spaceships) reacting to the actions of the player. If they are not careful, it is possible for the player to collapse the corridor in which they are standing in.

An interesting concept but somewhat repetitive

Though interesting, the game’s story has received some mixed reviews from players on its delivery. However, the gameplay itself has been almost unanimously praised by those who have played it. The only common complaint is that there is a limited selection of ships to salvage, and things can start to feel repetitive after a while.
