God of War Ragnarök
Sequel to 2018's God of War game
A brutal action game reshaped into something more human
God of War is a major reinvention of Santa Monica Studio’s long-running action series, moving Kratos from Greek mythology into the colder, harsher world of Norse legend. Instead of focusing only on rage, revenge, and spectacle, this game gives the series a more emotional core through Kratos’ relationship with his son, Atreus.
God of War’s begins as a simple mission to scatter a loved one’s ashes, but it slowly becomes a story about grief, restraint, parenthood, and the burden of a violent past. The result is a more mature adventure that keeps the franchise’s brutality while giving it stronger emotional weight.
God of War confidently changes the old formula without losing the series’ identity. The fixed cinematic camera of earlier entries is replaced by an over-the-shoulder perspective, making every swing of the Leviathan Axe feel heavy, close, and personal. Combat is slower and more tactical than before, but it remains intense. Kratos still feels powerful, but now players must think more carefully about spacing, enemy patterns, cooldowns, shield blocks, and Atreus’ support abilities.
The Leviathan Axe is one of the game’s greatest achievements. Throwing it, freezing enemies, recalling it back into Kratos’ hand, and chaining it with bare-handed attacks gives combat a constant sense of impact. Every hit feels deliberate, and the recall mechanic never stops feeling good. Atreus also becomes more useful as the game progresses, helping stun enemies, interrupt attacks, fire arrows, and expand the tactical flow of each encounter.
Exploration is another major strength. God of War is not a fully open-world game, but its interconnected areas give players plenty of reasons to wander off the main path. The Lake of Nine acts as a central hub, opening up new islands, hidden chambers, side quests, puzzles, and optional bosses as the story progresses. These areas make the world feel ancient and lived-in, with ruined temples, frozen landscapes, mythical creatures, and small stories scattered throughout.
The visual presentation remains one of its strongest qualities. Its Norse realms are detailed, cinematic, and carefully framed, from snowy forests and mountain paths to glowing magical spaces and massive mythological architecture. The famous single-shot camera style gives the entire journey a seamless, uninterrupted feel, making the adventure feel like one continuous story instead of a collection of disconnected missions. However, the slower pace may not suit fans wanting faster gameplay.
One of the most appreciated additions to God of War after release was the introduction of Photo Mode, allowing players to capture cinematic moments throughout the Norse realms. Players can adjust camera settings, filters, character visibility, and even facial expressions, making it a favorite tool for showcasing the game's breathtaking environments and dramatic battles.
The game also received a substantial New Game Plus (NG+) update. This mode lets players carry over equipment and abilities into a new playthrough while introducing stronger enemies, new upgrade resources, and additional gear progression paths. The feature significantly increases replay value and provides veterans with a tougher challenge after completing the main story.
Although originally released for PlayStation 4, God of War later benefited from PlayStation 5 enhancements and a PC release. The PS5 update introduced smoother performance options, including support for higher frame rates and improved visual presentation. Meanwhile, the Windows version added PC-focused features such as ultrawide monitor support, expanded graphics settings, and NVIDIA DLSS compatibility, giving players more flexibility in how they experience Kratos’ journey.
These enhancements have helped the game remain technically impressive years after launch. Even today, it continues to be regarded as one of the strongest examples of a successful console-to-PC adaptation, preserving the original experience while offering modern hardware improvements.
Another aspect that has gained recognition over time is the game's commitment to accessibility options and customizable controls. Later versions expanded settings that help players tailor combat, aiming, and interaction mechanics to their preferences. These additions make the adventure more approachable for a wider range of players without compromising the challenge and intensity that define the experience.
Combined with its cinematic storytelling, tactical combat, and memorable character development, these quality-of-life improvements demonstrate how God of War continued evolving beyond its original release, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most influential action-adventure games of its generation.
God of War succeeds because it transforms a once rage-driven action series into something more grounded, emotional, and layered without sacrificing its brutal edge. The heavier combat, strong bond between Kratos and Atreus, rich Norse world, and seamless presentation all work together to make the journey feel powerful from start to finish. However, its slower pace may not satisfy everyone, especially players who preferred the older games’ faster, more relentless style.
