Team-based military MMO
Foxhole is a top-down military massively multiplayer online (MMO) game. In this premium action title, players work as part of a unit to take over parts of a fictional world where total war has been ongoing for hundreds of years. One of the game’s hallmarks is its massive scale, where players engage in a persistent war that spans weeks.
The sheer size of Foxhole’s player base ensures a dynamic and ever-changing battlefield, offering an immersive sandbox experience unlike any other. With hundreds of hand-crafted towns and villages dotting the landscape, every encounter with friends or foes feels meaningful and impactful.
At first glance, Foxhole appears to be a throwback to the days of Red Alert, where soldiers and tanks roam the map destroying buildings and other units in a similar graphical style. Beneath the simple graphics, however, lurks a finely detailed and competitive game. Every aspect of the game, including building tank shells, running supply trucks, and engaging enemy fortifications, is all controlled by human players.
Groups of players must build up their reserves, keep strict order, and plan their advances to gain territory in the online world. While MMOs of this style are naturally dependent on players, this title in particular strikes a great balance between individual acts and teamwork. Players can drop in for a few hours at a time and find productive and satisfying tasks to accomplish.
Foxhole continues to improve in terms of gameplay and content, as evidenced by the constant rollout of updates and bug fixes. The 56th update, in particular, introduces the Blacksteele-Class Frigate and the AC-b “Trident” Submarine. The Blacksteele, a nimble Warden vessel, is designed to counter submersible threats. On the Colonial side, the AC-b “Trident” brings versatility and speed to naval warfare.
Besides the new ships, the update also delves into improved gameplay aspects. From revamped torpedo mechanics to improved visuals for torpedo impacts, the in-game naval warfare sees significant enhancements. The introduction of sea mines with distinct colors for friend and foe, along with the ability for ships to traverse continent borders in island regions, adds depth to strategic naval maneuvers. There are tweaks made to the voice chat functionality, as well.
Furthermore, the update also launches a Shard Queue system that optimizes player distribution into home regions, reducing wait times and enhancing overall gameplay flow. Other notable changes include reduced vehicle upgrade costs, increased hospital soldier supply production, and adjustments to ship resistances and weapon acceleration. These changes aim to fine-tune gameplay dynamics and maintain a balanced playing field. Meanwhile, some maps have received certain adjustments, too.
The Infantry Update transforms combat in Foxhole, providing more focus on tactical decision-making and requiring more team coordination. It brings a major change to the stamina system. With this update, high stamina is now crucial for efficient weapon handling and resistance to Green Ash attacks. New close-quarters combat further intensifies encounters, giving players the ability to engage enemies in tighter spaces.
In addition, the update brings a new feature that long-time fans of the game have been requesting for a while — customizable equipment load-outs. This feature enables players to save and quickly access their preferred kits, making it easier to prepare for different combat roles. The update further adds new vehicles and anti-tank weaponry, while medics receive significant updates—both in facilities and mechanics.
Another exciting addition is the Airborne Update, which expands the battlefield beyond ground and sea to include aerial combat. Players can now take on roles as paratroopers, infiltrating enemy lines, disrupting supply chains, and sabotaging critical equipment. A variety of aircraft are available for players to pilot, and the logistics system has been updated to support the production, supply, and maintenance of aircraft, ensuring they are always mission-ready.
Overall, Foxhole stands as a shining example of strategic depth, immersive gameplay, and unparalleled teamwork. As players dive into the fray of this top-down action game, they become integral parts of a larger unit, working together to shape the outcome of a persistent war that can span weeks at a time. It toes the line between individual acts and collective teamwork, allowing players to drop in and contribute meaningfully to the war effort.
