ELEX is an open world post-apocalyptic RPG. Set in a world ruined by a mysterious meteor, players must travel across a land inhabited by both traditional fantasy creatures and futuristic laser wielding enemies to unravel the secrets of the land.

By sword and jet pack

The strongest element of ELEX is its story and setting, featuring a mixture of classical fantasy features like medieval villages with laser wielding astronauts. This odd combination, like a cross between Skyrim and Destiny, surprisingly works thanks to a believable and detailed story line. Villages of bowmen and chieftains give quests from stone castles next to the ruins of tanks and robots while lasers and rockets await next to beasts and orcs. This strength, however, is quickly tempered thanks to an incredible amount of technical failings. While combat seems to take inspiration from Dark Souls, it is actually clunky and imprecise. Bugs are a constant issue and make quests and progression frequently impossible. Graphics and effects seem incredibly dated for a 2017 release, often playing like a game released a decade before. These issues can be forgotten by players more interested in story and difficulty, but ELEX still seems like an incomplete product for a full priced release.

Too many cooks

ELEX seems to take inspiration from every conceivable fashionable mechanic from modern RPGs. Some work well, but many fall flat, resulting in an odd mixture which is too uneven for a general recommendation.
