Made with stunning 3D visuals that cinematically slow down at times, El Paso, Elsewhere offers an action-packed adventure in the neo-noir subgenre. Set in a haunted motel in El Paso, Texas, the game’s premise requires you to investigate the place — which has strangely spawned 46 stories underground — and kill all enemies in your way.

Developed by Strange Scaffold, El Paso, Elsewhere is a single-player shooter game set in the third-person perspective. There’s a plethora of supernatural monsters to slay, like werewolves, mummies, and marionettes, and you have to defeat the main boss Draculae in the end.

A love story gone wrong

At face value, one would think that El Paso, Elsewhere is just like your typical supernatural shooter game — and that’s where you’d be wrong. This game is carefully crafted with graphics and animation that pay tribute to old-time classics, depicting shifting realities and close encounters with monsters that slow down in a cinematic effect. In it, you are put into the shoes of folklore researcher James Savage.

As Savage, you have to comb through the haunted hotel and rescue villains from Draculae, the lord of vampires. Each level needs a strategy that requires you to swallow down the adrenaline and think as quickly as you can, as otherwise you’ll get surrounded by the enemy. Hasty firing can’t also be the solution, as doing so may accidentally injure the hostages you’re trying to rescue.

However, the biggest plot twist is this: your character Savage and Draculae go way back as former lovers. The back story will unfold through animated cutscenes and fully dubbed voice-overs, giving you a peek into the lens of a love story gone wrong. It also features an all-original hip-hop score that will keep the excitement flowing. Although, the slowing down gimmick may feel a little repetitive the further you progress.

If all that isn’t enough to satiate your bloodthirst, then the additional offerings under the El Paso, Elsewhere franchise may delight you. It comes with additional downloadable content that you can purchase separately, such as the soundtrack called El Paso, Elsewhere: The Rap Album. Likewise, you can dip your toes into the short El Paso, Nightmare survival horror prequel. In it, you will instead play as IT programmer Luis Rojas who is trying to escape the shifting realities from the original game.

With a promising storyline and a series of challenging levels, El Paso, Elsewhere is a great way to spend your free time. In it, you play the role of a folklore researcher who has to stop the evil plans of the lord of the vampires before it’s too late — with an intriguing twist that will keep you going until you reach the end.
