In Battle Realms (+ Winter of the Wolf), you play as one of the four clans: Dragon, Serpent, Wolf, and Lotus. Each clan has distinct character designs, technology trees, and units–each of them wielding a specific gameplay advantage that suits certain gameplay strategies. This variety gives each of the clans a unique feel, which adds to the enjoyability of the game.

Right off the bat, Battle Realms distinguishes itself from the saturated RTS genre by introducing martial arts-inspired ways of fighting and unique animations. Whereas other games have units that repeatedly do the same things for movement, action, or death, Battle Realms creates different animations for the same actions, making it interesting to watch your armies duke it out on the battlefield.

The game also has gripping stories presented in its campaigns: Kenji’s Journey on the base product and Grayback’s Journey for the expansion pack. Through these games, you get to play through the lenses of the leaders of the Dragon and the Wolf clans, respectively. The only shortcoming in this repackaged version is the lack of new features for the game: no new faction, unit, or storyline to follow.
