Players nostalgic for classic real-time strategy (RTS) games like Dune II are in for a treat with Barkhan. It attempts to join the genre with 3D graphics that look a bit dated and a fight between three Great Clans. Currently released as a free-to-play demo, it does not offer much in terms of gameplay yet.

Lay out your best strategy

In Barkhan, you get to choose from one of the available factions with different strengths — whether you want to play as the Clan of Power, Will, or Trickery. Regardless of who you pick, you will then battle it out on the sandy battlefield. Just like in other RTS games, you have to strategize in order to win.

To grow your force, you need to build buildings and train units. However, canceling the building process is not possible, so you need to be sure in your decisions. Plus, you will notice that no real strategy is at play when playing the demo — as soon as you outnumber your enemy, you can then win.

Still worth a try

For anyone seeking the nostalgic decadence of old-timey RTS games, Barkhan is a competent title to check out. There are three factions to choose from, each having their own strengths that make room for better strategizing. It presents a few hiccups in its demo version, but it is worth a shot.
