Victor’s Test Night has a rather unassuming start. It feels like the usual guard shift until you start exploring and connecting the pieces together. You soon realize that the art gallery is the only building in the island named Eye Shadow, without anything else for as far as the eye can see. It’s a gallery and a warehouse. Things start becoming weirder with each day you stay.

As mentioned, part of your job is to report whether the exhibits have changed or have shown any form of anomaly, spot the difference-style. Report a change that did not happen, and you get penalized. Also, the game forces you to explore and make the most out of every day you have because after five days, the powers that be will arrange for your death and make it look like an accident.

Like most indie horror games, it doesn’t explain a lot and leaves the player to figure out the premise and the details hidden in the small things. However, the main problem with the game is that it is only available in Japanese, with no support for other languages. This blocks your access to most of the instructions, conversations, and flavor text needed for the story.

A language-blocked treat

At first glance, Victor’s Test Night immediately shows promise as an indie horror game. It starts with an unassuming setup and then gradually locks the player to do what it wants. Its use of spot-the-difference mechanics adds a bit of freshness to the experience, but it’s difficult to enjoy because of the impending horror. Should it add support for other languages, it will definitely draw in more players.
