Freely downloadable first-person exploration game
Vergilius is a free first-person exploration platform that immerses players in a forbidding and unfamiliar environment. As this is an entirely open environment, users can choose which direction to travel.
Although some of the environments are similar to those presented in other open-world games like The Planet Crafter, Vergilius is unique in the fact that there are no common goals, such as resource farming or vanquishing enemies along the way.
Set within a harsh world
As the name might already suggest, the premise of Vergilius slightly mimics that associated with the mythical character Vergil (in terms of survival and introspection). The game begins with the main character suddenly awakening to find himself in a land believed to straddle life and death. His main goal is to escape, and yet, this seems impossible.
Rich graphics and backgrounds
One impressive feature of this platform involves truly lifelike graphics. These are then augmented with the use of a first-person perspective, completely immersing the player in such a foreboding atmosphere. Likewise, intense audio effects and changing light conditions provide the illusion that real-time is passing while the user explores this mysterious domain.
An elusive goal
Players will first believe that the main intention of Vergilius is to escape the domain between life and death. However, they soon begin to learn that this is not as easy as it may appear. Only through navigating this dark and forbidding landscape will they find vital clues.
A truly contemplative first-person exploration game
Vergilius is similar to other platforms, such as Zelda Classic, in terms of its emphasis on exploration. However, dark settings combined with a somewhat haunting atmosphere provide an additional level of suspense.

- Players are not hindered in their actions
- Simple overall gameplay
Cons
- The plot can become repetitive over time
- There is no real ending
- Some conversations are not subtitled
- Scenes of suicide not suitable for younger players
