Tabletop-inspired dark fantasy tactical RPG

Valor of Man is a premium role-playing game for PC developed by Legacy Forge. It is a roguelike RPG set in a dark fantasy world and is inspired by classic tabletop games. In it, players will form a team of heroes to forge a path and find their destiny as they traverse a land in ruin.

Comparable to The Last Spell or Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Valor of Man boasts tactical turn-based combat, with a diverse roster of characters with unique skills and abilities available to take into battle. There’s also a demo version that newcomers can check out for a preview of the gameplay.

A test of valor

In a word, Valor of Man is a tactical RPG that offers a D&D-like adventure with roguelike elements while preserving the strategic and intense moment-to-moment action that these tabletop games are known for. Its main campaign is designed around a pick-up-and-play approach, without sacrificing depth, high-stakes tension, or meaningful story progression. This makes it ideal if you want to play at your own pace.

The highlight of the game’s combat is what it calls the Reaction System, in which every attack comes an opposite and equivalent reaction from enemies. This opens up a whole slew of possible outcomes for you during battles, both good and bad. Form a team of four warriors from 12 unique classes, each with unique skills and variants, as you take on procedural chapters with branching paths.

Collect and equip powerful gear and artifacts to boost your powers, and try to best the 10 Valor difficulty levels, where each decision could spell victory or utter defeat. Face over 50 unique enemies and nine tough bosses, and adapt your strategy for every encounter. A minor nitpick is that enemy encounters lack variety in Valor of Man, so fighting the same set of enemies repeatedly feels repetitive over time.

Clever and challenging

If you’re a fan of games like the Divinity series or even Baldur’s Gate 3, Valor of Man offers a similar experience, with the unpredictability and challenge that its roguelike elements provide. The reaction system is an interesting concept, making combat more engaging and requiring more thought-out actions and tactics on your part. Give it a try now and see for yourself. Recommended.
