Torn Away is an immersive interactive story game that takes players on a journey through the devastating landscape of World War II. Unlike most games, it stands out by offering a unique blend of gaming genres, including adventure, side-scrollers, and cinematic first-person levels.

In Torn Away, through the eyes of a 10-year-old girl named Asya, players experience the hardships and tragedies of this tumultuous period in history while trying to preserve their humanity. The game's narrative is centered around Asya, who is forcibly separated from her idyllic childhood and thrust into the horrors of wartime.

War through children’s eyes

This emotional rollercoaster of Torn Away takes you across Germany and Poland as Asya embarks on a perilous journey to reunite with her family. The gameplay offers a diverse mix of levels reminiscent of classic adventure games, touching mini-games that provide insight into the girl's rapid maturation, platformer mechanics with stealth elements, and first-person cinematic experiences that allow you to step into Asya's shoes.

Inspired by the diaries of children during the war, it sheds light on the forgotten fate of Ostarbeiters and is presented in a visually striking style that combines elements of socialist realism and modern French animation. The 3D levels are uniquely stylized as 2D art, and the original soundtrack draws inspiration from the evocative music of Hayao Miyazaki's films, French New Wave cinema, and experimental electronic music.

Here, you will immerse yourself in a deeply moving and historically significant narrative. It's a testament to the power of storytelling in gaming, offering an experience that will leave a lasting impact on you long after you’ve completed Asya's harrowing journey. However, its focus on the hardships of wartime and its emotional storytelling may not be suitable for all players, particularly those seeking more lighthearted or action-oriented experiences.

Gaming beyond conventions

Torn Away offers a rich and emotionally charged gameplay experience that immerses players in the tragic backdrop of World War II. As you assume the role of Asya, a young girl torn from her peaceful life, you'll embark on a poignant journey to reunite with your family. The game seamlessly weaves various gaming elements into its narrative, ranging from classic adventure game scenarios to emotionally touching mini-games.
