Inmost
Inmost: compact, melancholic action-puzzle with layered storytelling

Thomas Was Alone: A compact, narrative-driven puzzle-platform experience

Thomas Was Alone by Bithell Games is a minimalist 2D puzzle-platformer that explores sentience through concise level design. Players control multiple colored rectangles, switching between them to use distinct movement abilities and solve platforming puzzles across 100 levels. The release includes developer commentary and the Benjamin's Flight expansion, which adds extra levels and a prequel chapter. Designed for narrative-focused indie fans and puzzle-platformer players who favor emotional storytelling and uncluttered presentation.
In this title, a solo prototype became a studio breakout: the project began as a 24-hour Flash prototype in 2010 and established Bithell as an indie developer. The game is available on desktop and multiple consoles and mobile platforms; platform support includes Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation, Xbox One, Wii U, Switch, iOS, and Android, making the same core design widely accessible across device categories.
The design is strictly single-player: one person manages every character by switching between them to complete cooperative puzzles. That structure turns cooperation into a mechanical puzzle rather than a social mode, because sequencing and timing are handled by a single player. There is no online or local multiplayer, so the experience focuses on solitary problem solving and character interplay under a solo control model.
Visuals are deliberately minimal: colored rectangles move on clean geometric stages that emphasise silhouette and platform timing. Audio supplies much of the emotional content, with an original score by David Housden and a voiced performance by Danny Wallace that won a BAFTA Games Award for Performer. The combination gives abstract shapes clear personality without complex HUDs or dense graphical detail.
Onboarding is measured and accessible, since design prioritises atmosphere and narrative over extreme difficulty. The campaign is structured into ten themed chapters that introduce new mechanics and characters gradually. Minimum Windows requirements list Windows XP, a 500 MHz processor, 1 GB RAM, and roughly 400 MB disk space, so modest desktop setups can run the game without a high-performance system.
Thomas is a focused choice for players who value character-led storytelling delivered through gameplay and strong voice work, especially on modest hardware. Its chapter structure and measured difficulty suit short sessions and steady progression. Players seeking competitive multiplayer or intense, high-stakes challenge should consider other titles.
