The Curse of the Demon Tree is a Japanese role-playing game that is playable from the top-down point of view. Developed by Penny Ghost Studios LLC for PC gaming, this exploration title set in a post-apocalyptic world tackles the different stages of grief.   

Illustrated in hand-drawn 2D-pixel art, The Curse of the Demon Tree delivers a cinematic playthrough with its lore-rich narrative and dungeon-crawler mechanics. This party-based Japanese RPG features a dark, linear storyline and turn-based combat system, allowing players to choose their actions strategically through various quests and challenges. 

Experience the phases of grief 

The Curse of the Demon Tree tells the tale of Lamphlin and Feltin, two people who have resided on the mountain for years, ever since The Demon Tree emerged. However, due to this very same tree, the soil gradually became dry, prompting the two to leave the home they had always known and seek shelter somewhere else safe in the world. 

Set out on a purposeful journey across bizarre landscapes while navigating the stages of grief and loss and delving into the narratives of the planet’s remaining survivors in this emotionally driven title. Face hordes of unconventional enemy factions, explore scary environments, and discover heart-wrenching tales that allow one to look inward and ruminate on one’s experiences with grief and loss. 

Alongside its hand-drawn cinematic cutscenes, more than 120 distinct monsters, and 10 hidden areas across the expanse, the journey is accompanied by an accordion-driven soundtrack. However, due to the game’s nature, which touches on mental health crises, mutilation, substance abuse, and suicide, this might not be suitable for users dealing with mental health issues. The bright flashing imagery might also not be good for players with photosensitive epilepsy.
