Physics-based climbing adventure game
Surmount: A Mountain Climbing Adventure is a premium adventure game from developers Jasper Oprel and Indiana-Jonas. It is a physics-based climbing experience that challenges players to reach the top of the world's highest mountain. It boasts an extensive character creation system and can be played either solo or co-op.
Similar to games like Human Fall Flat or A Difficult Game About Climbing, Surmount: A Mountain Climbing Adventure also features ragdoll physics with cute and goofy animations to go with its lighthearted nature. It also boasts procedural, hand-crafted levels to make each run feel unique and fresh.
All the way up
To get started with Surmount: A Mounting Climbing Adventure, jump into its rather extensive character creation mode. Build a custom character with the available options that cover various details from head to toe. You can even pick out outfits and accessories for a more stylish look. As for modes, you can either play solo or with a friend or partner via local co-op.
The game takes place in the highest fictional mountain in the world, Mount Om. This large towering rock features multiple biomes that have been handcrafted from scratch and procedurally generated. When it comes to gameplay, you basically control each hand separately as you climb, and it's rather intuitive and humorous to see. Along the way, you'll meet unique personalities with their own stories and reasons for climbing.
What's more, the game features various items to unlock and equip that will help make climbing a bit easier. All that said, there is a slight learning curve at the start, but once get used to it, things will feel a lot more natural and fluid as you progress. You'll need it as the gameplay can be rather punishing if you make even small mistakes.
Fun and challenging
All in all, Surmount: A Mounting Climbing Adventure is a solid game if you're looking for something simple yet engaging to play. The visuals are quirky and the overall premise is pretty straightforward. It's also fun when you get to meet fellow climbers and learn what their motivations are. You do need some time to get used to the gameplay, but it's well worth it. Recommended.
