A colorful lo-fi shooter game
Super Space Club is a colorful, lo-fi action game filled with roguelike, bullet hell elements. While this can sound like a steep challenge to try to complete—especially when considering other titles in the same genre—the game is actually much more relaxing than you might think.
While Super Space Club does still have similar mechanics to games like Asterogues, it makes use of rhythmic elements and a funky soundtrack to allow you to feel as though you’re simply playing a casual, music-based game. You can even try shooting down enemies to the beat of the music.
Follow the beat
Super Space Club’s premise is simple yet captivating. The game offers a diverse range of pilots, ships, and weapons, allowing players to experiment with over 100 build combinations. Whether you prefer the explosive firepower of Olly or the stealthy ship-seeking shots of Roscoe, there's a playstyle to suit your preference. The physics-based thrusting mechanics make space travel feel authentic and add a layer of challenge to the game, as well.
Balancing your ship's energy becomes crucial, as running out can leave you vulnerable to devastating attacks. The lo-fi indie beats and chill-hop tunes, featuring vocal artists from around the world, create an immersive atmosphere that complements the colorful and aesthetically pleasing aspect of the game. This combination of audio and visual elements results in a uniquely relaxing yet challenging arcade experience that captivates players.
The game still has some aspects that could use some improvement, though. Players can experience some occasional visual glitches that can snap them out of the immersive experience, especially when facing larger hordes of enemies. The absence of multiplayer options, both local and online, is also a missed opportunity. Additionally, while the missions provide objectives to complete, there aren’t significant rewards for their accomplishment.
A groovy experience
Overall, Super Space Club presents a unique and enjoyable take on your typical roguelike games, allowing a fresh perspective that doesn’t leave you wanting to rage quit after every round. While there are some visual bugs to be fixed and more opportunities for co-op gameplay to explore, the game is still engaging enough to allow players hours’ worth of entertainment.
