Stray Doom Mod is a free-to-use game utility created by edypagaza for the classic first-person shooter (FPS), Doom II. As the name suggests, it lets you play as the cat from the 2022 post-apocalyptic puzzle platformer Stray. However, instead of simply running through alleys and escaping aliens, you bring hurt to hordes of demons in the retro Doom maps.

With the recognizable cat model wearing the signature Doom Marine helmet, Stray Doom Mod is a fun add-on that brings a new perspective on the classic game, although it has a few restrictions. You can also try Rat Doom Mod.

A wacky yet intuitive crossover

The first thing players would notice upon loading the Stray Doom Mod is the instantly recognizable combination of the two protagonists, even inside the retro game engine. A custom feline model with bright orange fur, complete with the backpack, often with the futuristic helmet used in the Doom franchise. Surprisingly, the custom model fits nicely with the environment, although the animation could use additional jumping animations.

If you’re wondering how the shooting mechanic is retained, the B-12 drone does it. Essentially, the cat moves around and the drone remains overhead, shooting on your behalf. This two-in-one model lets you retain the intuitive feel of playing Doom. In terms of other movement capabilities, the cat runs nicely and it can even lie on the floor for a much-deserved break. 

Other than the custom models, the levels and the enemies remain the same. It also changes the first-person perspective into a third-person isometric view with a movable camera, which also adds a level of immersion while letting you admire the custom character. Lastly, like most mods, it requires you to have a working copy of the Doom II base game before playing.

A new Stray experience

The warm reception enjoyed by Stray makes for a great addition to the thriving Doom modding community, as evidenced by the Stray Doom Mod. By introducing a custom feline model and giving players the option to wear the iconic Doom Marine helmet, it offers fans of both franchises a reason to try this out.
