Open-world Star Wars action adventure

Star Wars Outlaws is a premium adventure experience set in the massive Star Wars universe from Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft. Set in the Original Trilogy timeline, players follow galactic outlaw Kay Vess and her cute companion, Nix. As such, the game features a mix of new and familiar locations as the characters pull off a massive heist while taking various missions on the side.

With top-tier graphics and open-world gameplay, Star Wars Outlaws joins the new generation of canon Star Wars games, such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

A promising heist game in space

Star Wars Outlaws is set in between Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. This creates an intriguing heist plot in the middle of the war between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance. As such, fans can expect a mix of familiar locations such as Tatooine and new places like the forest moon of Toshara.

In some ways, the game feels like a limited Grand Theft Auto V in space, with players traversing a variety of environments. Promo materials have shown Kay Vess traveling on foot or through a speeder, a light and quick vehicle in the Star Wars universe. It even has some sort of notoriety system, which affects how various factions interact with the player.

While the setting of the game is promising to fans of the film series, it remains to be seen whether Kay Vess and Nix’s adventures will bring them to the main galactic conflict — or whether she’ll meet legends such as Han Solo or Lando Calrissian. Other than that, the only catch so far is that the open-world part isn’t that expansive — something that future updates and expansions can easily fix.

Post-launch content and Season Pass highlights

The Star Wars Outlaws™ Season Pass offers players access to two expansive story packs, enhancing the galaxy’s lore and gameplay depth. The first, Wild Card, released in Fall 2024, sees Kay navigating a high-stakes Sabacc tournament. Crossing paths with Lando Calrissian, she uncovers hidden agendas that deepen the stakes. Season Pass owners also gain the Hunter's Legacy and Cartel Ronin Bundles, unlocking outfits and customizations for Kay, Nix, and their equipment.

Scheduled for Spring 2025, the A Pirate’s Fortune story pack introduces Hondo Ohnaka, a veteran pirate with a vendetta against a rival gang. Kay’s encounters with Hondo explore themes of loyalty and betrayal, further entangling her in the Star Wars underworld. This second pack cements her role as a cunning scoundrel, bringing immersive narrative arcs to life. Both DLC packs are available separately or as part of the Season Pass.

Season Pass holders also unlock exclusive perks at launch, including the Kessel Runner character pack, featuring scoundrel-inspired outfits for Kay and Nix. Additionally, the "Jabba's Gambit" mission offers a unique storyline tied to the Hutt Cartel. While Jabba features prominently in the base game, this mission grants players access to an exclusive job linked to Jabba’s schemes. Together, these features ensure a richer, more personalized experience in the game’s universe.

A treat for old and new fans of the franchise

In conclusion, Star Wars Outlaws presents an exciting heist adventure set between Episodes V and VI, offering a mix of iconic and new locations. With a gameplay style similar to GTA games, but in space, it features diverse environments and a notoriety system. While its open-world scope is limited, future updates could expand its potential, making it a thrilling prospect for fans of the franchise.
