Space Wars: Interstellar Empires uses a combination of different gameplay styles. Travelling occurs in real time, while battles are turn-based. You start the game by picking a species to play as, after which you can choose a starting ship and a customised avatar to serve as the captain of your fleet. From there, it will be a case of building up your forces, ensuring that they can protect your region from invaders. You will also have the option of invading other players' regions, if you so desire. As the game as room for as many as forty players at any one time, these territorial disputes can certainly get hectic!

The game has an entire tie-in novel covering the different alien races and their histories, which helps to make the experience of playing the game much deeper. Each species ahs its own approach to ship building, from the utilitarian Sol vessels to the elegant Genari ships to the organic Hive vessels.
