Sonic: Freedom fighters 2 Plus is an action title created by the indie developer DizzyTheConquer. This 2D fighting game rendered in WinMUGEN is a fan-made release that improves on the original Freedom Fighters 2: Destiny of Mobius, the second installment of the Freedom Fighters series. It offers additional characters, rebalanced gameplay, enhanced sprites, and new stages.

In Sonic: Freedom fighters 2 Plus, you can choose more iconic characters from the Sonic universe left out in the original. The one-on-one and two-on-two battles remain but are now playable in additional game modes, catering to a wide range of playstyles.

Battles reloaded

Compared to the original, with only 17 playable characters, Sonic: Freedom fighters 2 Plus boasts a total of 27 playable characters in its expanded collection. In addition to the main characters kept from the original, it includes several secret characters and one boss character. You can now pick Chaotix, Nack, Blaze, Chaos, Ren, and Stimpy as secret characters, besides Sonic and others, and face Scourge in boss fights.

The game is more balanced, with an improved combat system and approachable game modes than the original, though it remains as engaging and intense in all fairness. With the addition of a sixth button, you can now perform a Dodge alongside a Roll when tapped with the forward or backward keys. You can also throw your opponents and make a Super Transform Move or Super Killer Move, exclusive for Scourge.

Whether you play solo or against other players, you can finally enjoy battles in game modes that suit your playstyle with a menu of modes, including story, versus, survival, and arcade modes. Bonus stages such as Car Bonus, SFII, Bricks Bonus, and Strength are all worth a try, and the new sprites are delightful. The game is still unstable, unfortunately, so you have to deal with occasional glitches.

If you’re not acquainted with the history of the Freedom Fighters series, you won’t realize that Sonic: Freedom Fighters 2 Plus is a fan-made title developed painstakingly out of sheer passion for the series. The game is a remarkable enhancement of the original, with its expanded roster of characters, rebalanced gameplay, and diverse game modes promising depth and a richer experience for fans of Sonic universe and fighting games.
