Expanded version of demon-collecting RPG
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is an action-packed title from Atlus. It is the definitive and enhanced version of the fifth numbered entry in the acclaimed Shin Megami Tensei series. Boasting an all-new storyline alongside the original, the fantasy RPG promises additional content and a chance to experience the war between angels and demons from a different perspective.
While this is not the first time the series has released an expansion, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is more content-rich and approachable than previous expanded editions like Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse and Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster.
Two paths, one world
If you find Shin Megami Tensei V falling short of your standards, its expanded version is here to fill the gap. With its new story path, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance redeems the original. Featuring new characters and an enigmatic cohort of demons called the Qadištu, the Canon of Vengeance throws you into the shoes of the fallen who seek revenge against those responsible for their demise.
Still, the original story, Canon of Creation, remains untouched, offering veterans a familiar yet polished experience. Along with these two storylines set in post-apocalyptic Tokyo come expanded areas, over 40 new demons to collect and battle, and a host of gameplay tweaks. Fully evolved, the gameplay is more accessible despite maintaining a layered design. It features an improved battle system, enhanced demon interactions, and wider field exploration.
Not to mention, the core gameplay loop of demon negotiation, fusion, and turn-based combat remains solid and engaging. The visuals rendered in 4K resolution are like no other. The post-apocalyptic Da'at is breathtaking and rich in details, with haunting landscapes and grotesque demon designs. To the disappointment of many fans, upgrading and transferring complete save files from the original is impossible since the new edition is self-contained.
Claim your early-purchase bonus
Players who purchased the game in advance are entitled to the DLC 2 Sacred Treasure Sets, which contains the Haraedo Bead and the Gleam Grenade. Available for permanent use, both items serve a purpose on the battlefield, with the former restoring your allies’ health and the latter causing enemies to take damage. Those who did not pre-order can still get the DLC, provided they purchased their own copy on or before June 21, 2024 (12:00 am EST).
Bigger and better
More than a complete makeover, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is an ambitious and substantial expansion that breathes new life into the original. The brand-new storyline and fresh content offer longtime players a reason to return, while the refined gameplay mechanics provide newcomers a more forgiving entry point. Plus, the visual improvements are undeniable. Despite the lack of save file transfer, the overall package exceeds expectations.
