SCP-087 is a free-to-play adventure experience that challenges the player to survive an encounter with the titular SCP. This survival-horror experience revolves around an anomaly known as The Stairwell. The inherently unpredictable staircase seems to extend indefinitely, with only dim lamps at regular intervals.

For an indie project, this interpretation of SCP-087 has some pretty good graphics quality. Also, true to the essence of the SCP project, it contains well-placed jumpscares that keep the game surprising for players. Unfortunately, it has a short playthrough and limited replayability. Explore a neverending staircase

SCP-087 is a fictional object and the focus of an entry on the collaborative writing project known as the SCP Foundation. The SCP Foundation is a community-driven project that features fictional containment procedures, descriptions, and stories about anomalous objects, creatures, and phenomena. The Stairwell is described as seemingly endless and dark, located in a nondescript building. Descending at a consistent angle, the bottom of this has never been observed.

The entry is known for its suspenseful and eerie narrative, where explorations of the staircase reveal increasingly disturbing phenomena. The nature of SCP-087 is intentionally left vague, and relies on a sense of mystery. Paired with good quality graphics, players are sent into an immersive experience that increasingly grows uneasy with every gimmick. From atmospheric sound effects to jumpscares, this makes the most out of the SCP’s established lore.

With the bottom of the SCP left unknown, the game understandably ends in a rather anticlimactic final jumpscare. Additionally, since it lacks randomness, the game lacks any replayability. Once you’ve seen the tricks it offers, you can easily manage your expectations for the next run. Lastly, as an indie project, it has a pretty short runtime of about 15 to 20 minutes.

Great for a quick scare

Without delving too much into the nature of the SCP Foundation and trapping the player in a singular experience with the titular anomaly, SCP-087 does its job well. It uses good quality audio and video to create an unsettling feeling that culminates in a series of jumpscares. Since the lore itself does not have any conclusion, expect a rather flat ending to the great survival-horror experience. Still, it’s worth a try.
