2D platforming adventure
Retro Revengers is a premium adventure experience inspired by classic 2D platformers from the past. This retro experience from Happymeal, Undercoders, and Shinyuden lets you play as one of the five friends known as the titular Revengers. They are sent into a strange land that threatens their respective games and the whole world.
From the interface and character designs to the gameplay mechanics, experienced arcade players will find the references and inspiration Retro Revengers. With it, expect the same roadblocks from classic arcade games, challenging but learnable. You can also check out Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium or Arcade Paradise.
Get revenge for the arcade world
The story of Retro Revengers revolves around Ossan, Mao, Taicho, Matchan, and Notchi. These five friends were mysteriously summoned into a different world, tasked with saving the world from the AAA Demon Overlord. These five characters have different designs and skills to match varying playstyles. As mentioned, the game draws heavy inspiration from arcade and SNES games of the past decades, making it immediately endearing to retro gaming fans.
In the game, you travel across different realms—sprawling prairies, eerie forests, and dark fortresses. All these games draw clear inspiration from games like Puzzle Bobble, Snow Bros, Super Mario, and more. As a modern retro, it has various mechanics, traps, and features that make the platforming engaging and fresh. It has a top-tier soundtrack courtesy of Manami Matsumae, the music composer behind Megaman and Shovel Knight.
However, the difficulty might be divisive for this title. Combat is consistently present but is always kept at a minimum. There’s no need to manage swarms of enemies because they mostly come one at a time. Most of the game’s challenges come from platforming and boss battles, which don’t pull any punches and essentially offset the easy combat. Overall, this arrangement makes the game replayable.
A casual platformer with a story
Although largely inspired by classic arcade adventures, Retro Revengers is more than just a throwback entry. It has an imaginative storyline relating to isekai anime that’s all the rage in recent years, and it features more advanced gameplay mechanics set in its retro world. With the added versatility of choosing and switching between five unique characters, this game gives you virtually unlimited ways of solving its platforming challenges. Recommended.
