Brave the rough seas
Red Rogue Sea is an adventure game for PC developed by Firemage Studios. In this strategic roguelike game, you are a pirate captain in charge of a crew on a voyage across the treacherous waters of the archipelago. It’s a blend of ship management, deckbuilding, as well as turn-based combat.
Unlike other adventure-driven titles, Red Rogue Sea’s story is shaped by the actions you take throughout the journey. It’s not a game with linear narrative storytelling; instead, the plot unfolds as you interact with the events and encounters across the different islands that you visit — leading you to unknown paths.
Sail into perilous waters
In Red Rogue Sea, the combat is designed around a tactical deck-building system, wherein you have to take turns in battle against an enemy ship. Choose from a vast selection of over 70 tactical cards to deal damage to the opposing party. However, the UI feels cramped and overwhelming during these chaotic encounters, but once you familiarize yourself with it, the fights become engaging and intuitive.
As a roguelike game, the whole archipelago is a procedurally generated map, meaning the islands always shift layouts. These islands that you visit have events and encounters, which, depending on your course of action, influence the story of the game. Basically, you are presented with situations, as well as a list of choices and actions that you can choose from.
As you grind and make progress, you can unlock over 30 ship combinations and different pirate captains. The game has a high replay value; each run, you can pick a captain and a ship to command, and if you die, you can pick another pirate captain to venture the dangerous high seas again, offering a fresh and unique experience each time.
Punishing at times, but rewarding if you succeed
Overall, Red Rogue Sea is a solid pirate-themed game that blends tactical combat, deckbuilding, and ship management into one replayable journey that’s both challenging and rewarding. It thrives in an engaging loop of diving into the unknown and facing the risks and dangers it possesses. Some encounters do seem punishing, but they deliver this sense of satisfaction once you overcome them.
