Outlast is a psychological horror game developed by Red Barrels for the PlayStation 4. The game follows the story of Miles Upshur, an investigative journalist who uncovers inhuman experiments being performed on asylum patients. The game uses cinematic gameplay to create a stylistic point and forces players to run away from danger as there is no combat system. Miles can only document what is happening inside the Mount Massive Asylum as he is pursued through the halls, rooms, yards, and enclosed laboratories by distressed and aggressive inhabitants.

Players are equipped with only a night vision camera that requires batteries to function, and they must solve puzzles by locating and collecting items to progress through the Asylum. The game features realistic movement animation and horror sting sound effects that make players sympathize with the protagonist.
