ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission is a premium adventure game developed by Team Asobi. It is a VR title meant to showcase the features and capabilities of Sony's PlayStation VR headset. In it, players will control a robot named Captain Astro, who goes on a journey to rescue his lost crew that has been scattered across multiple dimensions.

Born from the characters introduced in The Playroom, ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission is a full-blown gaming adventure featuring the same charming cast. Now, the PS VR makes it possible to offer a more immersive and interactive experience.

Showcase piece

Virtual Reality technology has come a long way from a mere concept to a realized consumer product. The first truly commercial product came with the Oculus Rift, and others like the HTC Vive followed closely after. Tech giant Sony also joined in with its PlayStation VR headset, and one of the games that became a showcase piece for it was ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission.

This game is a 3D open-world platform with a high level of interactivity that the PS VR makes possible. Move the camera by physically moving your head, destroy walls with headbutts, and scatter leaves by blowing on your microphone. All these things make the already fun platforming gameplay much more immersive. Save over 200 bots as you explore 20 levels across five distinct worlds.

What's more, you get to unlock seven unique gadgets for your Dualshock 4-like ship that help you overcome all kinds of platforming challenges and puzzles. This game truly is quite unique and takes advantage of the different capabilities that the PS VR has to offer. That said, the gameplay is sadly a bit short. A playthrough will last around three to four hours, depending on your pace.

Fun but short

On the one hand, ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission does an excellent job of showcasing what the PlayStation VR is capable of when used to its full extent. On the other, it's a fun and charming adventure game that can stand on its own. Unfortunately, the experience does not last for long, but it is one that is well worth having.
