The New Era Mod advances the timeline in the game Victoria 2: Heart of Darkness. After you have finished the regular campaign, you can start two new campaigns starting in 1920 and another in 1936. It adds new events and extends the gameplay.

This Victoria II mod was mildly inspired by how Tropico 4 added its “Modern Times” DLC that was set after the original campaign’s timeline. The setup, layout, and UI are very similar to the style of Empire: Total War. The mod toys with historical accuracy without sticking to it.

Set during the interwar period

This historical war game is set between the first and second world wars. There were conflicts as the remainder of the Ottoman empire was divided up. The 1936 campaign involved lots of power struggles in Europe, as the member countries bullied and suppressed the Germans, leading them to take ever more desperate measures to survive.

Not historically accurate

The developers made it very clear that the game cannot exist in a fair state if it follows genuine world history. As a result, the Heart of Darkness mod features world events, but the outcomes are controlled by the player rather than historical accuracy.

Keeping it simple enough to maintain control

There are many ways that the various facets and functions of the game may overlap to create a mess. But, by keeping the campaigns fairly simple and the events fair, the developers have avoided a lot of potential game mechanic conflicts.

The less complex campaigns do stand out against those offered by the base game. Still, the New Era mod still extends the gameplay in a fun and engaging way.

Some balancing is still required

The New Era mod doesn't have the balance that the vanilla game has. The developers have tried to make this strategy game fairer, but some elements are still unbalanced. For example, a submarine is significantly more durable than an aircraft carrier.
