Top-down hack-and-slash indie game
Nevermore: The Chamber Door is a retro-styled hack-and-slash platform. Players are provided with a top-down view of different battlefield arenas. The goal is to vanquish as many enemies as possible without incurring lethal damage.
This game is similar to other platforms such as Death Trash in terms of fluid mechanics and perspective. However, the decidedly retro feel associated with Nevermore harkens back to memories of traditional 16- and 32-bit games.
An interesting backstory
As the title might already suggest, Nevermore was inspired by the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe. Many of the NPCs and demons reflect the brooding nature of Poe, and a statue of Athena can be used to upgrade charms and skills that have been collected. Thus, Nevermore can also be considered a progressive RPG.
A simple and clean interface
While many hack-and-slash platforms can become cluttered with enemies and similar background elements, there are few distractions within Nevermore. Most levels consist of nothing more than a battle arena, demons, and locations to obtain upgrades during gameplay.
Powering up along the way
Players will obtain four bonuses as they progress to higher levels. These are intelligence, strength, vitality, and luck. It is also possible to score points through the use of combinations, and this will provide additional bonuses. These skills are necessary, as vanquishing level bosses would otherwise be nearly impossible.
Classic hack-and-slash fun
Nevermore: The Chamber Door shares certain common characteristics with other games, such as Eternium and even Thymesia, particularly when referring to how characters will need to upgrade their powers along the way. Thanks to innovative combos and the ability to retain one's skills, even in the event of a defeat, the overall end-user experience is further enhanced.
Pros
- Smooth and fluid gameplay
- Players can enhance their skills as they progress
Cons
- Power-ups upgrade existing skills as opposed to unlocking new ones
- No support for external controllers (only a keyboard and mouse)
