Speed-running platforming FPS
Neon White is an action game developed by Annapurna Interactive. It is a first-person shooter with puzzle-platforming elements mixed in. Here, players take on the role of an assassin from hell named White. Your goal is to slay demons for a chance to ascend to Heaven.
In between fighting, Neon White also plays a visual novel that revolves around a goofy good-time gang of anime doofuses. Players will also notice that the game has cards, but there aren't any deck-building mechanics. These cards are only weapon pick-ups. Players must also note that the game is strictly single-player only.
What is Neon White?
In Neon White, you play as an assassin from hell, drafted by the powers of Heaven to kill off demons. The price is redemption and a place in The Good Place. Here, you will play various levels, each containing a goal of defeating all enemies. Reaching the goal will reward you with experience points, which you can use to see alternate routes and hidden items in the stages you play.
The game is a first-person shooter, full stop. It uses the standard WASD and mouse input. Unlike other FPS, however, cards will be your weapons—the actual weapons and players' hands will be non-visible. Each card will have a standard firing mode and an alternate special ability you can activate by discarding it. Note that this is a speed-running FPS. Each round lasts not more than 20 seconds when done right.
This game is also an anime visual novel with dating sim mechanics. The story plays out between levels and across peaceful places of the hub. You can unlock dialogues and even form relationships with the NPCs. Graphics-wise, the game is extremely stylish, with levels looking lovely in a 90s CGI way. Moreover, despite the characters wearing demonic masks, their designs are great.
Is the game good?
Overall, Neon White is worth checking out. It is a first-person shooter game at the core. However, it offers an abundance of mechanics, including standard RNG-fueled platforming levels, card-based mechanics, and even a dating sim. It also comes with anime-style visuals and a great level design. However, this is a speed-running FPS. You can complete the levels in a flash. Additionally, it only comes with a single-player campaign.
