Team shooter in a fungal-filled world
Mycopunk, developed by Pigeons at Play, is a sci-fi and co-op shooter that throws you into a bizarre and chaotic world overrun by deadly enemies. Join the New Atlas Hazard Crew, a group of robot rejects tasked with exterminating this fungal threat while wielding unique weapons.
Mycopunk's premise centers around a squad of misfit robots hired by the SAXON Corporation for a seemingly simple extermination job. However, as your crew delves deeper into the planet-side missions, you’ll uncover a mystery surrounding it and the corporation's true motives. Now it’s up to your crew to settle the score.
Use the planet’s tech against them
Mycopunk's core gameplay revolves around fast-paced action and vast customization. You can choose from a variety of futuristic weaponry, including power tools, and then modify them using a grid-based upgrade system to create unique and powerful combinations. The graphics took inspiration from graphic novels, paired with smooth and modern flair. Blast your enemies with the game’s familiar controls and energetic soundtrack.
The game features hordes of enemies corrupted and weaponized by the fungus, requiring you and your team to work together to survive. It also encourages strategic co-op gameplay, where players combine their upgraded abilities and customized weapons to create fusion builds. However, the game also noted that playing alone heightens its difficulty, making it dependent on a companion or a full team to progress reasonably.
Between missions, you can relax and socialize in Roach Motel, which serves as a hub for the Hazard Crew. This space is filled with toys and games, providing a break from the intense action and an opportunity to learn more about the game's world and characters. Aside from that, the characters are full of quirk and personality, despite being robots, which is a welcome addition to the game.
Succeeds in what it promised
Mycopunk is a well-done co-op shooter that delivers more hits than misses. It's fast-paced action, extensive weapon customization, and strategic team play. While offering a unique setting and energetic style, the game is designed with co-op in mind, which may increase difficulty for solo players. Nonetheless, what’s important is that it is fun, replayable, and you can even hang out with teammates once the dust has settled.
