Mixed Feelings is a free interactive story game for laptop and desktop PCs. Developed by SpoonyCatt, Mixed Feelings tell the story of Peri, Silas, and Kahira in Asphodel Meadows, a strange yet beautiful place filled with equally strange creatures.

As you progress through the story, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with the characters in a meaningful way and make important choices, similar to games like Doki Doki Literature Club! and Butterfly Soup.

A plot-driven gaming style

Billed as a visual novel by the developer, Mixed Feelings focuses first on character development and plot rather than gameplay mechanics. Each still frame of the game is beautifully illustrated to provide additional depth to the characters and setting. With that said, you will be called upon to make decisions throughout the game in a “choose your own adventure” style that will impact the unfolding storyline. But ultimately, you’ll find yourself along for the ride that the author/developer has created for you.

Familiar art direction

Like many visual novels, Mixed Feelings employs a familiar furry humanoid art style that turns otherwise voiceless creatures into communicative characters with personalities all their own. The establishing shots of the surrounding setting of Asphodel Meadows also do an excellent job of creating an environment that feels true to the story. While you may want to take your time to absorb the visuals, Mixed Feelings is a rather short game that can be played through quickly, even after making different choices when asked.

Thanks to its linear storytelling and pacing, Mixed Feelings is a visual novel game that’s easy to play through. Even with in-depth character development and a plot-driven story, it’s a short game that you can get through relatively quickly. Though the illustrations are bright and inviting, leaning heavily on a furry art style, Mixed Feelings is only recommended for mature players due to some mildly explicit content and trigger warnings.
