Standalone mech piloting sim
Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is a free-to-play simulation from Studio MekTek and Microsoft Game Studios, serving as a standalone expansion to the mech piloting game MechWarrior 4: Vengeance. As such, it shares similarities with the base game—from the premise, the visuals, and the in-game world. You take the role of Spectre, the titular mech mercenary getting increasingly involved in a war between houses.
A steady difficulty progression and a good selection of detailed mechs make Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries a fun game. The main difference in this game is its overemphasis on earning money, although the title perfectly justifies this.
Unlike MechWarrior Online, Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is a single-player adventure where you take charge of Spectre. As the game progresses, the missions get increasingly harder. Additionally, you can open one of three endings, depending on how you manage your alliances with the Houses of Steiner and Davion. This gives the game a degree of replayability, allowing you to test out other builds and strategies.
Gameplay-wise, it fits right into the MechWarrior series. Players pilot a massive battle robot as they take on missions, with over 30 mechs and about 40 missions. Aside from piloting BattleMechs, you also run your mercenary company, adding a business management aspect. Your team is sponsored by one of four groups in the massive BattleTech universe, each with unique strengths and weaknesses.
Of course, it comes with the standard BattleMech gameplay challenges. You need to manage your ammunition as well as your mech’s heat levels. However, the game can toggle those two mechanics on or off, making the game unusually easy. Aside from these options, the main challenge in the game is the added management, which emphasizes the need to earn money instead of simply winning battles.
Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is a unique entry in the extensive MechWarrior franchise. It has a storyline that fits into the larger BattleTech universe. The same story also branches out into multiple paths and endings, incentivizing you to play it again after finishing a run. With the added management challenge and the easy way out with the options, it’s designed to reach a wider market.
