Fanmade open-source RTS
MechCommander: Legacy is a free-to-play action game from the MechCommander Legacy Development Team (MLDT). This is an open-source real-time strategy (RTS) game that uses the Spring Engine, but is not an official title from MicroProse who made the other titles in the 90s and early 2000s. In this game, you also command a platoon of mechs and lead them into victory.
Supporting solo or multiplayer, MechCommander: Legacy is an immersive experience in the vein of the classic MechWarrior games. However, expect the same steep learning curve and challenging competition. Also, check out MechWarrior Online, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, or MechWarrior 5: Clans.
Preserving the franchise legacy
The most impressive thing about MechCommander: Legacy is that it is an indie project started by two individuals collectively known among Battletech and MechWarrior circles as the MLDT. Using the publicly available Spring RTS Engine, they managed to create a working game that invokes that authentic MechWarrior gaming experience. Most of this project contains characters, locations, and story elements that reference the original games’ storylines.
Like other games in the series, this one offers players the chance to command their own squad of BattleMechs in real-time battles against enemy forces. The game features a user-friendly interface that allows for easy control and access to your squad's various abilities. The graphics, while dated by today's standards, still hold up remarkably well and the game's sound design adds an extra layer of immersion to the gameplay experience.
While Legacy is a fantastic labor of love from the developers, it does have its fair share of issues. The AI can be frustratingly difficult at times, often making seemingly illogical decisions that can lead to unnecessary losses for your squad. Additionally, the game's controls and camera angles can be clunky and take some getting used to. However, these issues do not detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the game.
A great fan-made entry
Overall, MechCommander: Legacy is an honor to the classic mech franchise. Its intuitive gameplay concept, engaging storyline, and challenging missions make it a must-play for any fan of strategy games. While it may have some minor flaws, they are easily overlooked in light of the overall quality of the game. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the series, Legacy deserves a try.
