A 2.5D side-scroller Souls-like
Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree is a gorgeous 2.5D side-scrolling action RPG developed by Primal Game Studio. It blends elements of Metroidvania exploration with Souls-like combat mechanics. Set in a grimdark fantasy universe, the game invites players to navigate a world overrun by monsters, where humanity has retreated behind walls of ignorance and fear.
Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree has a decaying world teeming with secrets and challenges. Its atmospheric visuals and haunting soundtrack contribute to a compelling dark fantasy experience. The interconnected map encourages deep exploration that’s rewarded with secret content and items. There’s also a free demo.
Free Faelduum from darkness and doom
Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree’s premise is captivating as Faelduum is portrayed as a crumbling, haunted world succumbing to Entropy, monsters roam freely. You play as an Inquisitor chosen by the Witch Tree and must fight through darkness, explore multiple paths, craft gear, and decide what you’re willing to sacrifice to push back the corruption that inhabits Faeulduum. While the world is praised for its polish, the controls are clunky, and polish issues remain.
Combat in Mandragora is methodical, requiring precise timing and strategy. Players can choose from six unique classes, each offering distinct playstyles and abilities. The game features a robust skill tree, allowing for deep customization and experimentation. However, some traversal mechanics, such as double jump and floating abilities, have been criticized for their lack of responsiveness. Additionally, some mechanics feel grind heavy Moreover, it has a harsh difficulty at the start.
A world dipped in agony and fantasy
In Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree there are six playable classes, each with their own starting skills, playstyles, and strengths. The Vanguard is a heavy character, good with 1-handed weapons. Flameweaver excels in elemental fire magic. Spellbinder is a ranged caster and is a glasscanon. Nightshade is equipped with poison and daggers. Wylwarden weilds nature magic to their disposal, and Vindicator summons celestial magic along with weirlding sword and shield.
In addition, the game offers a rich lore connected to its atmospheric world, correlating the adventure and enemies toward the story's conclusion, making each encounter meaningful. The availability of multiple unique classes means different fighting styles, items, and character development systems — enriching players’ ability to role-play and express freedom in their play. Moreover, crafting powerful weapons, armor, and items makes it exciting to build your character.
A storied world with rich crafting and caravan systems
Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree introduced the Crafting & Caravan NPCs update introduces a new system centered around Artisan Vendors. During exploration, you encounter seven skilled vendors (blacksmiths, alchemists, tailors, and more) who can join your Caravan. When they join, they start at Artisan Level 1, and craft items, consumables, and enchants together with you to gain XP, leveling up. As they level, these vendors unlock better diagrams, letting you craft more powerful gear.
The Caravan also becomes more than just a mobile shop; vendors have carts or tents that you can upgrade. Upgrading these brings perks like cheaper crafting costs, better material drop rates, or longer-lasting consumable effects. And yes, they also keep a rotating stock of items for purchase. This update nicely complements the other recent major patches which brought in New Game+, new weapons, and plenty of quality-of-life improvements. Although the caravan is UI confusing.
A dark fantasy worth exploring that keeps evolving
Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree stands out as a grim and ambitious Souls-like that thrives on atmosphere, challenging combat, and deep customization. Its haunting world, diverse classes, and expanded crafting systems keep exploration rewarding. However, clunky controls, grind-heavy mechanics, and confusing UI elements sometimes disrupt the flow. Even with its flaws, the game’s blend of lore, strategy, and rich updates makes it a promising adventure for dark fantasy fans.
