Mafia II: Definitive Edition tells the story of Vito Scaletta from a war hero to a small-time criminal trying to pay off his father's debts, loyalty, betrayal, and a sense of moral ambiguity. Developed by Hangar 13, the narrative remains its strongest suit and is made better by the polish given to its graphics and overall experience. 

In Mafia II: Definitive Edition, Vito, Joe, and the ensemble cast deliver memorable performances, and Empire Bay remains evocative of the classic gangster film era. This action, story-driven crime drama with character work over open-ended sandbox play remains a good experience and more.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition is a remaster with updated textures and graphical enhancements. In many scenes, these improvements are noticeable; some lighting touches, and models look sharper. However, it’s here that the remaster often falls short. Many players report highlight, texture pop-ins, frame rate instability, and glitches. These technical hiccups significantly affect immersion, especially given how much driving and travel through the city are required. 

This open-world game has always had more of a focus on scripted missions and narrative progression rather than open-world freedom. Driving is frequent, mission variety is mixed, and action segments with their original shooting mechanics show their age. Mechanics like shooting feel serviceable but no longer top-tier. On the plus side, the inclusion of all the original DLCs gives some extra content and perspective on side stories. 

One of the highlights throughout the game is its soundtrack and sound design. The licensed music, radio chatter, period details, and ambient sounds do a lot of the heavy lifting in immersing you in 1940s-50s America. While the world lacks full open-world interactivity, its thoughtful design supports the narrative’s cinematic pacing and reinforces the game’s focus on storytelling over exploration.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition succeeds in preserving the gripping narrative of Vito Scaletta while adding sharper visuals and all original DLCs for added value. Its strong story, atmosphere, and soundtrack remain highlights, though technical issues, dated mechanics, and limited open-world freedom hold it back. More of a visual upgrade than a full overhaul, it’s best appreciated by fans of mob dramas seeking an updated but not fully modernized experience.
