Action roguelike inspired by King Arthur
Knight vs Giant: The Broken Excalibur is a premium action game from Gambir Studio and PQube that takes inspiration from the Arthurian Legends. Step into the graves of the chosen one, wielding the broken Excalibur, as you try to save Camelot from the clutches of the Void Giant and its minions. It features high-resolution visuals with cute, miniaturized versions of characters.
With a good cast of characters and an even better leveling system, Knight vs Giant: The Broken Excalibur is a fun alternative that looks like a cross between Vampire Survivors and Brotato, although it has a shorter playthrough.
Guide King Arthur to victory
Knight vs Giant: The Broken Excalibur has an interesting take on King Arthur. In retrieving the Holy Grail for Merlin, the Knights of the Round Table have released the Void Giant. After losing the Knights and breaking Excalibur, Merlin casts a spell to trap the Giant in an Astral Dimension — but unfortunately takes the rest of Camelot with it. Now, it’s up to the player to save the kingdom.
In terms of visuals, the game features a top-down perspective with miniaturized versions of characters. It looks like a standard JRPG game, but without the dated pixel art style. It is also accompanied by a good soundtrack that rounds up the different biomes in the game. As a roguelike, every run starts from the very start, allowing you to experiment with different builds.
As mentioned before, the game has quite a short playthrough. Completionists might not be satisfied with the experience as you can get to 100 percent achievements in 20 to 30 hours. Also, players have reported issues with the hitboxes, getting damage even outside the designated hit zones that are marked by red circles. These two issues make the game divisive at best.
A fun, promising roguelike
Overall, Knight vs Giant: The Broken Excalibur already has the makings of a great roguelike title. The story is universally known, the gameplay mechanics are fun, and even the visuals are already on point. Unfortunately, it suffers from a couple of issues that, once resolved, would easily make this a definite must-try among fans of the franchise. Still, it’s worth a shot.
