The Kong comes back in 3D
Donkey Kong: Bananza marks the gorilla’s first fully 3D platformer since 1999’s Donkey Kong 64. Developed by Nintendo, Donkey Kong(DK) deep into the underground world of Ingot Isle to reclaim stolen Banandium Gems from the sinister VoidCo corporation. In a surprising twist, his companion isn’t Diddy but a younger Pauline who offers musical support and becomes a playable second character.
A bold 3D comeback
Donkey Kong: Bananza turns the underground into a destructible playground. DK can smash walls, dig through floors, roll boulders, turf-surf, and throw chunks of the environment to forge new paths or find secrets. These mechanics are supported by Bananza transformations powered by Bananergy that makes for an interesting action-packed solution to problems. However, it’s only available on Nintendo Switch 2.
Bananza runs at 1080p handheld and dynamic 4K docked, with smooth 60 fps performance and HDR lighting. The game offers a focused single-player campaign structured through five distinct underground biomes, each with themed boss battles and exploration zones. It also includes retro-style 2.5D segments and challenge courses that reward extra Banandium, alongside a creative DK Artist Mode.
DK swings back into the spotlight
Donkey Kong: Bananza revitalizes the classic ape with explosive new mechanics, transforming levels, and dynamic platforming in full 3D. With destructible environments, Bananergy powers, and a fresh companion in Pauline, it brings inventive gameplay and modern polish. However, its exclusivity to the Switch 2 may limit accessibility. Still, it’s a triumphant return for DK that longtime fans and newcomers alike will appreciate.
