SCP: Blackout
An SCP horror game you can experience in VR
Become SCP-529
JOSIE is a free adventure video game wherein you get to play as a strange half-cat in a top-secret facility. Developed by wrensey, this indie 3D platformer game is set in the expansive world of the SCP Foundation website and features the adorable SCP-529 as the protagonist. Unlike most of the games based on the SCP Foundation universe, this one isn’t fully about horrors and jumpscares but it still has the series’ iconic creepy atmosphere.
The SCP Foundation is an online community-based collaborative-fiction project that documents a fictional secret organization of the same name. This Foundation is tasked with locating and containing anything that defies the natural law—colloquially known as “SCPs.” Anomalous in nature, if they are left uncontained, they could pose a direct threat to humanity’s life and perception of reality. There are thousands of SCPs under surveillance and they are usually the star of any fanmade games.
There are already popular titles that showcase beloved SCPs, such as SCP-173 in both SCP – Containment Breach and SCP Unity. This time, though, you get to experience the anomalous existence of SCP-529—or “Josie”, as she’s known to everyone. This cute gray tabby cat mysteriously only has her front half visible and her back half missing, even though she can move like any normal cat. She’s a safe SCP and is allowed to roam around the facility.
In JOSIE, you’ve got to find a way to visit one of the SCPs. You must explore and figure out how to access certain locations. This will usually require items that you can find lying about. Since the facility personnel like Josie, she can easily interact with them, too. The controls can be iffy, however, as jumping onto tall objects doesn’t register at times. It’s also highly recommended to use a controller instead of your keyboard.
All in all, JOSIE is a nice game that features one of the lesser-known—but equally beloved—characters of an online community project. Its vibe is quite different from other similar games, with its cute isometric and low-poly graphics, but it’s still very atmospheric and reminds you of its original material. The game could really use some tweaking when it comes to the controls’ responsiveness, however.
