THE LAST ESCAPE is a free adventure game made by indie developer Ariel Endaraues. It's a 2D platformer that was designed in retro pixel art styling. In it, players take control of a Royal Air Force officer as they attempt to escape the maximum-security prison, Colditz Castle during the Second World War.

Like Black Sea and The Doom Of The Pond, THE LAST ESCAPE is a game that was specifically developed with the classic personal home PC, the ZX Spectrum, in mind. As such, it features charming 8-bit graphics and colorful and vibrant design as is typical of games during that time.

How do I play it?

THE LAST ESCAPE is set during the Second World War, in Colditz Castle, a maximum-security prison that houses some of the most notorious high-ranking military officers known for their escape attempts. You play as Rick "Smasherman" Reid, captain of the Royal Air Force, and you, much like every inmate held within, will be attempting to escape captivity. Elude detection and do whatever's necessary to get back home safely.

The game is a sidescrolling platformer game that utilizes a simple control scheme for its gameplay through your keyboard. Your O and P keys for moving left and right, respectively. The Q key will serve double duty as your up movement, as well as to trigger the hide action, while A is for down. Lastly, press the Spacebar to use or drop objects.

A few tips/reminders to help you as you play the game. You will be able to carry a maximum of two items at the same time. Objects can be traded or dropped in areas marked with a down arrow. The only other thing worth mentioning here is that if you plan on giving it a try, just know that it will come with a relatively short playthrough experience.
